Purpose

The Interpreter is responsible for providing accurate, neutral, and confidential oral interpretation and limited written translation to support programme and protection activities. The role ensures effective communication between project staff and persons of concern, including interviews with PWS for case management, MHPSS consultations and interactions where beneficiaries face language barriers, enabling safe access to information and services.

The Interpreter’s role is strictly limited to interpretation and translation functions and does not include counselling, case management, documentation, data entry, referrals, or administrative support.

Key Responsibilities

1. Interpretation & Translation

• Provide accurate oral interpretation during community outreach, awareness sessions, meetings, and field activities.
• Provide interpretation support during case management interviews, assessments, and follow-up interactions to facilitate communication between case management staff and beneficiaries facing language barriers.
• Support interpretation during protection-related and MHPSS sessions strictly as a language facilitator, without engaging in counselling or advice.
• Translate short written materials or messages when required and approved by the supervisor.

2. Professional Conduct & Neutrality

• Interpret faithfully without adding, omitting, or altering meaning.
• Maintain professional boundaries and avoid personal opinions or influence during interpreted interactions.
• Refrain from engaging in programme implementation, decision-making, or documentation related to cases.
• Declare any conflict of interest that may affect neutrality.

3. Confidentiality & Protection Principles

• Maintain strict confidentiality of all information heard or accessed during interpretation.
• Adhere to safeguarding, data protection, and Do No Harm principles at all times.
• Ensure informed consent is respected during interpreted interactions.
• Immediately report safeguarding concerns to the CBP Coordinator or relevant programme staff, without intervening directly.

4. Coordination & Availability

• Coordinate with the CBP Coordinator and programme teams regarding interpretation schedules and assignments.
• Accompany programme staff to field locations as required solely for interpretation purposes.
• Maintain punctuality and preparedness for all assigned sessions.

Other Duties

• Perform any other duties related to the position, as reasonably assigned by the Supervisor, in line with organisational policies and operational requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

• Preferably Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Development Studies, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field
• Fluency in relevant languages (e.g., Pashto, Dari, Urdu, and/or English), both verbal and comprehension.
• At least 1 year of experience in interpretation, preferably in humanitarian, refugee, or community-based programming.
• Strong understanding of cultural sensitivities within refugee and host communities.
• Ability to handle sensitive discussions with discretion and professionalism.
• Willingness to travel within project areas and participate in field activities.
