The Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP) is an institution of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). Established by the Aga Khan Foundation in 1982, AKRSP has been working in Federally Administered Gilgit Baltistan and district Chitral of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the field of integrated rural development with the mission to promote inclusive human development and eradicate extreme poverty.

We are looking for a suitable and competent candidates to fill in the position of Specialist High Altitude Pasture and Fodder Management at our Gilgit (Core) office with occasional travel to Baltistan, Chitral and Islamabad.

Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Programme Head Economic Development the the Specialist High Altitude Pasture and Fodder Management will Prepare sustainable management strategies and implementation plan to improve high altitude pastures and rangelands in the programme area.

Experience required:

At least 7 years' experience in the relevant field is required. 

Job Description:

Some of the major responsibilities are as following:

  • Carryout comprehensive biodiversity assessment of the pastures and rangelands to identify the status of palatable and nutritious grass species and develop procedures for their conservation;
  • Analyse the current state of the management of the pasture and rangelands and determine their carrying capacity;
  • Conduct the valuation of the provisioning services (fresh water, wood, food, fodder, medicines, fuel etc.) that the pastures and rangelands offer to the surrounding communities;
  • Through PRA, identify the key issues concerning the pastures and rangelands such as social conflicts, over grazing, land degradation, draught etc. and suggest short and long term interventions to restore and improve high altitude pastures and rangelands;
  • In consultation with the beneficiary communities, establish pasture management committees (PMCs), and develop community based pastures and rangelands management plans;
  • Through research establish and demonstration plots for improved grass and forage verities;
  • Suggest/introduce new technologies for fodder conservation and improvement;
  • Develop a pasture and rangeland management manual to be used by relevant communities and AKRSP staff.

 M.Sc, in ForestryMasters Degree M.Sc./MPhil in NRM, Rangeland management or in any related field with 10 years relevant experience will also be considered.
