JOB  DESCRIPTION  ADVOCACY  COORDINATOR

 

Position:                                Advocacy Coordinator

Department:                         Advocacy Department

Reports to:                           Executive Director

Reportees / Supervision:   Advocacy Officer

 

2.0   POSITION OBJECTIVES

  • Implementing advocacy and outreach activities in line with SDPI’s on-going assignments.
  • Facilitate project heads and Executive Director towards ensuring better penetration of key messages delivered through SDPI’s research.
  • Ensure follow up of policy recommendations provided by SDPI to government and non-government stakeholders.
  • Implement an integrated media strategy that combines elements of print, electronic and social media.

3.0   JOB  RESPONSIBILITIES,  DUTIES  AND  TASKS

3.1   Core Responsibilities & Duties

  • Design, plan and implement advocacy strategy and campaigns for the Institute.
  • Work towards building linkages between policy research and advocacy, and coordinate advocacy related activities with all units within the Institute.
  • Design public policy advocacy campaign on SDPI’s research themes in consultation with Council of Fellows and Advisors (CFA) and research staff.
  • Form networks with like-minded development sector donors, NGOs, private sector, research organizations and academic institutions to mobilize their support for sustainable development initiatives, which may include public interest litigation and other legal measures.
  • Represent SDPI at meetings called by other organizations and partners, and support public interest campaign initiatives by other organizations/individuals.
  • Engage SDPI in various national and international networks.
  • Create public awareness through effective liaison with print/electronic media, organize regular press conferences, seminars and conferences for advocacy and dissemination of information, and prepare press releases, articles, reports and information material.
  • Establish systematic channels of advocacy with the government agencies and public representatives to influence public policies in public interest.
  • Keep tabs on SDPI research and use the channels of advocacy to lobby for policy making/change.
  • Write and field proposals as part of overall fund raising responsibility
  • Deliver at least one training course and two seminars in a year.
  • Prepare narrative reports of various advocacy initiatives.
  • Compile policy recommendations emerging out of various advocacy meetings and forward them to relevant policy making circles.
  • Undertake any other job related task as determined by the Executive Director or his/her nominee.

4.0   JOB  SPECIFICATION  (MINIMUM  JOB  REQUIREMENTS)

Education: Master’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Mass Media or related field from a recognized University

Work Experience: 10 years of work experience in mainstream media and advocacy programs. Knowledge of development sector priorities, challenges and opportunities

Relevant Sector Experience: 5 Years
